I did the same thing with my Asus G1s. I didn’t even think about Ubuntu really until I had the computer in my hands – XP became such a chore to install on it. Then I thought surely linux will work! And it did. Feisty was hard work with the wireless card but Gutsy has been a champ!

# Arul, wicd isn’t packaged for Ubuntu officially so you’ve to change your sources.list before and include this:

I’ve installed Ubuntu on a few different laptops, and Dell certainly was the easiest. Currently I’m running 8.04 beta on a Sony Vaio SZ680, and while it runs mostly, there are certain parts that don’t work at all. The biggest missing piece is currently brightness controls for either graphics card (the SZ series comes with two and a hardware switch). Both display at full intensity, and it’s not very good for the eyes, or the battery for that matter.

Still, work is being done, and there’s plenty of others trying to figure this same problem out on Ubuntu Forums.

sudo apt-get install wicd

It did the job for me after days of struggle with the non-working wifi

I am new to this scene but there so much help out there that I can confidently say that there’s hope even for the hopeless like me.I love Ubuntu!
